Plaid councillor honoured by young people for his work

Plaid Cymru councillor Mike Prew has been given a special award by young people for his work as Caerphilly’s youth champion over the past 10 years.

Mike was presented with a pen during Caerphilly’s Annual Youth Awards.

Young people that Mike had helped and encouraged were shown on a large screen paying tribute to his “amazing work” before the presentation.

The popular Morgan Jones ward councillor was first elected as youth champion in 2008 as part of an 'I'm a Councillor - Get me out of here! competition and has continued to be chosen by young people ever since..

Mike said: “It has been great working with young people over the past decade. I’m honoured to have been received an award – it was totally unexpected and a wonderful surprise.

“I’ve always enjoyed working with young people and helping ensure their voice in Caerphilly county borough is heard.  The youth service in Caerphilly plays a really important role.”

Married to Lisa and with a son, Thomas, 14, Mike added: “I feel it is vitally important that young people feel included in decisions affecting them and I’m pleased to see proposals to reduce the voting age in elections to 16 in Wales.”
