Steffan Lewis AM: A Tribute

Councillor Colin Mann, Leader of the Plaid Cymru group on Caerphilly council, paid tribute to Steffan Lewis AM following his death from cancer at the age of just 34.

Colin Mann said: "This is a tragic day for everyone who knew Steffan Lewis and for the people of Wales.  My thoughts are with his wife Shona, his young son Celyn and all his family whose loss is particularly severe. The passing away of Steffan is a massive loss, both to Plaid Cymru and to Wales

"We have lost someone who had the potential to make a significant contribution to the future of our country.  He was seen by many as a future Plaid Leader to come.  It is difficult to over-estimate the loss in Steffan’s passing.

"Steffan was a very talented and very fair-minded politician who touched the lives of a huge number of people.  Although he had only spent a short time in the National Assembly, he had already made his mark there. He drafted the Continuity Bill, which was adopted by the Welsh Government to combat a power grab from Westminster in response to the Brexit situation.

"He gained the admiration of all of us in the way he campaigned against cancer, at the same time continuing his work as an AM until shortly before his untimely death.  Prior to his election he was a very respected researcher working for Jocelyn Davies and for former Plaid Leader Leanne Wood.  I know that he worked extremely hard in connection with the televised election debates

"It will take a very long time to come to terms with this tragic news."
